Windows Central reported on August 18, 2026, that a Crucial X10 Pro 4TB owner completed a Return Materials Authorization (RMA) and was offered the original purchase price after support said no replacement was available. The report relies on the owner's account and a support email translated from German, so it establishes one case rather than a company-wide rule.

Micron announced on December 3, 2025, that it would end shipments under its consumer brand in February 2026 while continuing warranty service and support. The announcement did not promise like-for-like replacements or define how any cash remedy would be valued.

Micron promised service, not a particular remedy

Warranty eligibility and the available remedy are separate questions. A claim can fall within the stated coverage period without giving the owner a contractual right to a new drive if the warranty leaves the remedy to the manufacturer.

The August report shows why that distinction matters during a product wind-down. It does not show that every consumer model or region has run out of replacement units, and Micron has not published a model-by-model inventory list.

The UK terms put two limits on SSD coverage

Micron's UK-facing legal terms cover an SSD bought by the original end customer through the company or an authorized seller for three or five years, depending on the product, or until its published total-bytes-written limit is reached, whichever comes first. The applicable product data sheet sets the limit, and the drive's Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) data measures progress toward it.

The same SSD section lets Micron Commercial Products Group choose repair, replacement, store credit or a refund at the lower of the original purchase price and fair market value. A headline warranty period therefore says how long a claim may remain eligible, not which remedy Micron must provide.

The published page leaves a refund ambiguity

After allowing a refund as an SSD warranty remedy, the manufacturer's UK page later says refunds apply only to new products bought directly from its website within 45 days, or 30 days for factory-recertified SSDs. The page does not explain whether that later sentence addresses only ordinary purchase returns or also limits refunds offered under a multi-year warranty.

APPI News could not resolve the two passages from the published text alone. A claimant offered cash should ask support to identify the controlling clause, state the valuation date and formula, and explain in writing whether taxes, shipping or other charges are included.

Local consumer rights remain a separate track

The UK terms say the limited warranty does not affect statutory rights and direct customers to region-specific return routes. The rights available against a seller or manufacturer depend on the country of purchase, the seller's identity and the terms presented when the order was placed.

A manufacturer's warranty should therefore be checked separately from any mandatory rights under local law. The UK page cannot establish the remedy available to a buyer in another country, and APPI News has not verified the rules of every market where the brand's products were sold.

Micron's Client SSD formula does not govern consumer drives

Micron's separate Client SSD warranty, revised January 10, 2017, calculates a credit or refund by multiplying the purchase price by the percentage of useful life remaining. That document names Micron Client SSDs, not the consumer-brand drives, and cannot replace the warranty issued for the product being claimed.

Product line labels matter because different Micron warranty pages use different eligibility periods and refund formulas. The model number on the drive, its packaging and the original sales listing should match the warranty document used in the claim.

Build the evidence file before shipping

Save the exact model and serial number, the dated invoice or order confirmation, the seller's legal name, the product listing, and the data sheet and warranty text available at purchase. If the drive still reports health data, save a SMART screenshot showing its total bytes written and any failure warnings.

Ask support to state the fault decision, available remedies, refund formula, shipping responsibility and remaining coverage after any replacement. Keep the full email thread, the RMA number, packing instructions and shipment tracking rather than relying on a phone summary.

The UK terms require proof of purchase and an RMA number, and instruct owners to back up and delete stored data before sending a drive for repair, replacement, credit or refund. If a failed drive cannot be read or erased, record that fact in the support ticket before shipping it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a five-year SSD warranty guarantee a replacement drive?
No. The UK terms set an eligibility period but leave the choice among repair, replacement, store credit and refund to Micron Commercial Products Group.

Can a refund be lower than the cost of a replacement?
Yes. The UK terms use the lower of the original purchase price and fair market value, while the reported X10 Pro case ended in an offer at the original purchase price even though the owner said a replacement cost more.

Does one reported refund mean Micron changed every consumer SSD warranty?
No. The report documents one X10 Pro 4TB claim, and APPI News could not verify replacement inventory or claim outcomes across other products and regions.

What should be saved before an SSD is shipped?
Keep the receipt, product page, warranty text, model and serial numbers, SMART data, support messages, RMA authorization and tracking record. Back up and erase readable data before return, following the instructions supplied with the RMA.
